Binary Oppositions and Ideology

The main binary opposition in this interview is between both speakers themselves, both of them have completely different views, which therefore creates arguments and conflict between Russel Brand and Nigel Farage. Their views on  political ideologies do not have any similarities at all, and as we can see in this interview, both of them want their points to be heard by the public/audience.
In this interview, we can see that Russel Brand is representing the working class. He relates to the audience much more in comparison to Nigel Farage. Russel Brand says during the interview to the audience that he is 'just like you'. Which shows he can relate to the audience and engage with them, and most of all understand where they are coming from. He also talks about being brought up in a similar environment as the audience, and tries to turn them against Nigel Farage, by saying that Nigel was brought up in a more privileged environment. By Russel doing this, he can get the audience to level with him more easily as he shows them he understands their struggles.

In this interview the main binary opposition is both speakers views ( Russel Brand and Peter Hitchens ) on drug addiction being a crime or not. Their views on criminal ideologies differ quite a lot. Hitchens believes that drug use should be a criminal offence and that drug addictions shouldn't be treated as a "disease". Whereas, Russel believes drug addictions should be taken more seriously. Therefore, due to them both having completely different views on the way drug addiction should be handle, this created conflict between both speakers. Russel Brand can be seen to sympathise with the whole topic as he went through drug addiction himself. He believes that people with drug addictions should get proper care/treatment, instead of thrown into jail for it being a criminal offence. Therefore, due to both of their views being completely different, there is a lot of conflict about what is right and wrong and both want what they have to say to be heard.

12D Cover Work - Monday 7/12, p1/2

The World of Mockingjay

This article looks at the dystopian representation of capitalist society. This is shown in the most recent Hunger Games film, and can also be seen in the previous ones. In the dystopian society of Panem, there are thirteen districts in the city of the country ( ‘The Capitol’ ) with the aim to survive. Each district is poor, and have to survive on little food and water. They therefore have to work to provide coal, technology, food, power and other services to the Capitol. The 'Hunger Games' is a game in which two children between the ages of 11-18 are sent from each district to partake in an annual event that involves forcing each child to kill one another until only one is remaining. The aim of the game is to keep peace in the districts, as well as keeping them under control. In terms of Marxist theory we can see that the ruling class keep the poor under control. The main ideology of the way Panem is run is that; the more powerful are the ones that control what goes on. President Snow believes that hope is the ‘only thing stronger than fear’ and scares the rebels by using the media and propaganda to show previous events of the 'Hunger Games'.

Understanding Ideology - They Live:

This article analyses the complex aspects of Media Studies, it looks at the concept of 'Ideology'. It looks at the meaning of the term, as well as looking at the concept of hegemony. This article also looks at the work of three key theorists. Furthermore, it explore the term through a film from 1988: John Carpenter’s They Live. These  three features  are generally agreed to be part of the dominant ideology in Britain:

• People should put their families first.
• Women should behave in feminine ways, and look after their appearance.
• People should work hard for their money.

Hegemony is the ability of the dominant class to project its own way of seeing the world so that those who are dominated by it (the masses), accept it as ‘common sense’ and ‘natural’. Slavoj Zizek is a current famous theorist, who looks at how we accept our control, yet we are still dominated. He argues that we are in a new global era where we cannot see how massively we are dominated by the elite 1%.

What does Gramsci's theory of hegemony suggest about power and ideology in society?

    • Gramsci introduced the concept of hegemony, and its role in social control. He suggested that those who have power maintain the control they have, instead of using force. He argued that the power of ideology derives primarily from ideas and structures which support, and thus serve the purpose of, an elite social group which is able to dominate through ideas, rather than militaristic strength or fear. This implies that power and ideology in society doesn't have to be forced, but to remain constant.
What does French theorist Louis Althusser suggest about ideology and consumerism?

    • The French theorist Louis ALthusser suggests that ideology is the greatest material power and dominates our day to day lives through two key forms of control: Repressive State Control, also known as ‘Repressive State Apparatuses’ which are dominated by the ruling elite. These state agencies regulate social behaviour and repress the masses through violence, punitive law, and fear. And ‘Ideological State Apparatuses’ (ISAs), These looser institutions control and dominate implicitly through ‘common sense’ acceptance and social norms, rather than through fear. This echoes Gramsci’s concept of hegemony, by which ideology’s power derives primarily from consent as opposed to the use of force.

    Year 12 cover work: Representation

    MM50

    1. The female gaze article is about research that suggests advertising campaigns are dominated by heterosexual models that are size 0 to 2. Furthermore, it states that women in advertising are too "white" and under size 6. However, the brand 'Dove' decided to ban size 0 models and began to use models with different sizes.

    2. The film that started the debate about the female body/image, is called 'A Perfect 14' and it looks/challenges the idea of what beauty is. It also goes against the traditional image of what a woman should look like and instead looks at different women.

    3. The 'female gaze' differentiates from the 'male gaze'. It differs as Mulvey suggests the 'male gaze' is when women are shown for the pleasure of men. Whereas, the 'female gaze' is when women look at other women (models) about what the perfect body is like.

    4. I think the media should spend more time portraying women in different sizes. I think just showing one type of woman (size 0 model) would put more pressure on women as they would only have one certain way to look. However, I think there's more realism in the media portraying women in different sizes.

    5. 'A Perfect 14' is trying to portray to it's audience that you should feel comfortable in your own body and shouldn't try to look a different way like the size 0 models. The main character of the article is diagnosed with cancer, and this provides a emotional identification. Overall, the film portrays a positive outlook on positive models.

    MM51

    Introduction

This section of the article talks about how a person, place, objects or ideas being represented in a media text have been mediated by the act of representation. It also states how representations are filtered through someones point of view.

    Representations and the mass media

This section suggests that representations process through certain people, for example the photographer, picture editor and news editor. They can give images multiple meanings depending on their own ideologies.

The how, who and why of representation

We must consider who creates the image and the reason they create it. The producer always considers 4 things:

-the expectations and needs of the target audience
-the limitations provided by genre codes
-the type of narrative they wish to create
    -their institutional remit.

Barthes talks about the idea of 'naturalisation' and how the media chose certain things and do things in a particular way, which make the audience believe it's a normal and natural thing.

Another approach to ideology - the work of Stuart Hall

Hall believes that the audience don't accept the ideology of texts but instead social and cultural experiences effect their opinions and interpretations. Halls critique is known the 'Encoding/Decoding Model.' Also, there is a relationship between the reader/viewer and the text

    Representations and new media

Due to new technology and media, people can now make and share their own media products more efficiently. There's more ways for people to publicise their websites etc.

An example - representing national identity in old and new media

Old media also constructs a view to their audience. For example, in 2014, during the world cup, The Sun sent a free newspaper to millions of homes, representing it's own idea of England is like. The whole paper was about 'English Identity' and was a positive approach to the monarchy. The modern day media, gave people a chance to give their opinions about old media.

I'm very active on social media, I use a lot of social apps like, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr and Twitter. When posting things, I do make conscious decisions of whether or not I want to post whatever it is I'm posting. However, I don't spend ages thinking if I want to post it and if it'll effect the way I'm presented on social media.

In my opinion, I think both the audience and the institutions have power regarding representations in the media. For example, the audiences tell the institutions what the want to see, and if the institutions go against what the audience want, they won't have as many viewers. So I think both contribute to representations in the media.

    Representations

    Graham Norton, BBC1 – Schwarzenegger

In this clip men can be conveyed in many different ways. For example, the host, Graham Norton is portrayed in a feminine way, which contrasts to Arnold Schwarzenegger who is seen as very masculine. Arnold is seen as the dominant representation of men, as he's portrayed as a sporty and strong man. This representation of Arnold links with Perkins theory, as this stereotype of Arnold has helped with his fame and success. It could also link with Mulvey's theory as she suggests the dominant view in the media is masculine. Contrary, Graham Norton is gay and is seen quite feminine and therefore, reinforces Medhursts theory. Furthermore, the woman, Miranda is an alternative representation of women, due to her appearance.

    London 2012 – Bond/Queen

In this clip, London is portrayed as very wealthy and a nice place to live. This could link to Perkins theory as she suggests that some stereotypes could be true/positive, and in this case there is a positive stereotype of London. Furthermore, James Bond is portrayed in dominant way, as he's dressed formally. In addition, there's a sense of a female gaze here as Daniel Craig (James Bond) is being looked at and admired. The Queen is also portrayed in a posh and wealthy way, and this could link to Perkins theory, as the Queen is being presented in a positive.

    Some Girls – BBC3 trailer

This trailer portrays the four girls in an alternative way as you wouldn't normally see them on a team of something, and on a football team particularly. This goes against the stereotype of girls not being sporty/active. Furthermore, there is a dominant view of the blonde, as she only cares about her looks and isn't very intellectual. This links to Medhurts theory as it's a negative stereotype. In addition, the next girl is presented as aggressive and this shows an alternative view, as girls are seen as not so aggressive and more gentle. This could link also link to Medhurts theory.

    Representation

Black Females - In this film/scene we can tell that the black females mainly are being discriminated as they are the only slaves. Just from this one scene we can tell that black females were treated extremely unfairly and they are being disrespected.

White Females - We can tell the white females are the more dominant characters in this film, as they have the power to control what they want the black females to do.

Location - This may of been set out of town, maybe in the country side. It was set in the 1960s, when black people were racially discriminated.

    Theories Applied

In this film, white people are seen as the more dominant/powerful people. During the 1960s, black people were discriminated due to their colour and treated badly, as shown in this scene they are treated as slaves. Therefore, this links with Dyer's theory as he states that people with power stereotype those with less power and in this film, white people think they're more dominant as they have more wealth and power and stereotype black people as they have less power. This is a dominant portrayal as during the time black people were seen as inferior to white, and this is shown in this scene. In addition, as black people were seen as inferior to white people, this also links to Medhurt's theory as there's a negative representation of a minority group, this could also support Dyer's theory
However, in this scene you could argue the stereotype is being challenged as the daughter who was told to go around the back, completely disregarded what the white female said and came into the house anyway. However, in this scene it showed if you were black and tried to stand up for your rights you'd end up coming off worse, as shown they both got kicked out of the house. This could link to Perkins theory as a stereotype isn't shown but it was the reality of what was happening at the time.
Furthermore, throughout this scene, white people are seen as the more dominant figures, and there's a large amount of discrimination towards black people. This shows an accurate view of what Mississippi was like in the 1960s. As well as this linking to Dyer's and Medhurt's theories.

This could also support Perkins theory, because this film reveals the truth about what was actually happening at the time, instead of showing a stereotype.
In addition, the main character Emma Stone goes against the stereotype of black people being mistreated and instead of doing the same as everyone else, she decides to help them. This is an alternative portrayal as during this time, there wasn't a lot of white people helping the black people.

Finally, in this film, women were expected to stay at home to be a "housewife" and men were supposed to go out and work and bring in an income. However, Emma Stone goes against this stereotype once again and decides to become a journalist whilst helping the black people. Therefore, this is an alternative portrayal as it wasn't expected of women to go out and work.

Therefore, this film/scene links with the three theories from Dyer, Medhurst and Perkins. As Dyer states that people with power stereotype those with less power. Medhurst states that stereotyping is a shorthand for identification, and Perkins suggests that stereotypes can be positive and partly true.

    Audience Theory

     The Hypodermic Needle Model

The Daily Mail article links to the hypodermic needle model as it explains how playing a game overtime can influence your attitude in the real world. It explained how playing a violent game can make people act in a violent way or have a violent mindset. Therefore, this links to the hypodermic needle model the model explains that if some media is portrayed to the audience, e.g, violence. It can influence the way someone can act and can also be seen as dangerous.

Someone may criticise this front cover as they call this young boy a violent game addict. However, the audience doesn't know for sure if the game was the cause of this. One reason may be because of his conditions at home, the cover clearly states he lives with his single mother. Therefore, the theory hasn't be tested for definite to know whether the game was the cause of this.

    The two-step flow model

The two-step flow model is the theory that informs the audience about social factors and the importance of them. It also mentions how audiences are influenced by opinion leaders and these are people who control the reactions of the audience towards the media.

In my opinion, I think TotalBiscuit is an opinion leader and would therefore fit into the two-step flow model. He is an opinion as people listen to him and he can be seen as influential due to his amount of subscribers.

The Telegraphs article also fits into the two-step flow model theory. It shows that audiences can be influenced by social factors. It also portrays that anyone can be an opinion leader, even musicians.

Jamal Edwards also fits under the category of an opinion leader, as he's been so successful, from a young age. As he's so successful people will look up to him and be inspired and is therefore an opinion leader.

    Uses and Gratification

    Diversion -  The Vampire Diaries

This would fit into the category of diversion, as it's a supernatural series which would help the audience escape reality and the everyday problems they face. It allows the audience to be entertained and not worry about reality for a bit.

     Personal Identity - TOWIE

This would go under personal identity as this is a reality programme and the audience might be able to relate to some of the characters.

    Surveillance - BBC NEWS

This is very important to audiences as it informs them about whats going on around the world. It produces useful information which keeps us updated and informed with what's happening.

    Dependency Theory

I use the media for many things. However, I mostly use it to keep in touch with family friends and to see what they're up to. I use apps such as Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter to do this. I also use the media to keep myself entertained, I do this by watching things on Netflix and YouTube. Despite using the media for entertainment purposes, I also use the media if I need help with something or if I need to do research. Furthermore, I feel as if we are very dependent on media, especially the younger generation as some would feel lost without the media and their phones. Also, we are very reliant on the media to find out what's happening around the world, or to research something, as it's easier and quicker to do on your laptop or your phone. I strongly agree with Telegraphs article,as there are statistics to prove how society as become dependent on media. In addition, I think as the media has grown we've also grown to be dependent on it.

    Media Awards

    Labrat

One of my favourite productions from media awards, was Labrat. I enjoyed the non-diegetic sounds played during the scenes as it really fitted in and created emotion and drama. It had a really clear narrative. I really liked the use of the close-ups and the and fade-out transitions. The way this production was shot looked very professional and the way it was edited didn't look messy. Furthermore, the use of the characters acting added drama and tension. The use of dim lighting at the end, also created a dramatic scene and helped engage the audience. Overall, this production was  shot extremely well and it had a well written narrative which was shown clearly to the audience.

The second production I liked was The Experiment. I enjoyed this, as it had a different sci-fi narrative, which was shown nicely. The beginning started of extremely intriguing had my attention from the very start. The use of the handheld camera work adds a sense of tension and drama. In addition, there was tracking shot as the character was running. The non-diegetic music played in the background, which was parallel to the scene adds to the theme of tension. The overall production, was very fast paced which helped keep the audience engaged. I liked the use of a monochrome theme as she was going over her memories, as it added emotion. The use of the characters expressions helped make the audience feel sympathy and emotion towards. Finally, I enjoyed this production as the narrative was well written out and the way it was edited and shot was done professionally.

    Cool Brands

    Netflix -

Netflix is a site that shows both movies and documentaries. In terms of Dyers 'Lines of Appeals' this would go under happy families, as it has something for everyone to watch, and brings everyone together and would go under family values as a key brand value. I like Netflix as it has loads of different genres of both movies and documentaries on it.

    Youtube -

YouTube is a site that would fit under all of Dyers 'Lines of Appeals' as YouTube has a variety of things on it, e.g, Music, Movies, Beauty Channels, Fashion Channels and many more. Therefore, anyone can use it. I like YouTube as it everything on it and it's really easy to use. As it has a variety of different things on it, this could be a reason as its seen as a 'cool brand'.

    Apple -

Apple would go under elite people or experts in terms of Dyers 'Lines of Appeals' as people who own Apple products  can be technical. Furthermore, Apple products are quite expensive and therefore this brand could also go under successful careers as you'd have to be wealthy to afford an Apple product.

    Chanel -

Chanel would go under Beautiful women as this brand is mainly targeted at women. It could also go under rich luxurious lifestyles as this brand is quite expensive, and self - importance and pride, as having a Chanel product could make you feel like you have self worth.

    Instagram -

Instagram would fit under social responsibility as a key brand value. However, as Instagram could be used for many different things, this brand would fit under most of Dyers 'Lines of Appeals. This may be seen as a Cool Brand as Instagram is a useful app, as it can be used to promote businesses as well as keeping in touch with your friends and family.

    Narrative

From this scene we can tell that Tom Cruise is the main character, as most of the shots are of him, from this we can infer that Tom Cruise may be the Hero and Emily Blunt may be the Helper as she is another character that has a full shot in terms of Vladimir Propp's 'stock  characters. Furthermore, from this clip we can understand that the Villain are the mechanical creatures that are creating a war with the humans.  In addition, we can tell that Tom Cruise isn't used to the surrounding he is in or isn't fully aware of what he's doing. Therefore, Todorov's theory of 'Disequilibrium' can be used, as we can tell something (the villain) has disturbed an existing state of harmony. The Donor in this scene could be the machine Tom Cruise is wearing as it's protecting him from the villain. The Action codes in this film that help develop a narrative are the machines being used to kill the mechanical creatures and the creatures themselves, as it makes the audience wanting to watch on and find out what happens. Finally, the reason of why the creatures are attacking can go under the Enigma codes as it creates mystery during the narrative.

From the close-up at the start of the scene, we can tell that Stefan is one of the main characters. We can tell that Damon may be the Villain as the non-diegetic music creates and uneasy atmosphere as Damon appears. Furthermore, the way he walks around the room and hits Stefan conveys that he's the more dominant character. A hero hasn't been identified in this scene, however, we can tell that Stefan is the good guy, as he's more understanding and not so violent. We can tell that the Equilibrium has been disturbed as there is no longer an existing state of harmony, but violence and tension. Furthermore, the enigma code of this scene is why Damon wants to give Stefan a life time of misery. The action codes of this scene are the veins that appear on Stefan's face to show us that he isn't human, also the strength they both have when they are fighting, helps the audience understand they're not normal human beings.

In terms of Propp's stock characters the villain is Red, as he acts dodgy and then starts to beat up Saul and Dale. The Hero could be Dale, as he's the one who realises Red is lying to them. The helper are both Saul and Dale, as they both help each other fight off Red. The donor in this scene is whatever both characters can use to defend themselves in the house. However, there is no Princess (person being saved by the hero) in this scene. In terms of Todorov's theory there is an equilibrium for a short moment, however this is disrupted when Dale realises Red is lying and they begin to fight and ends up with a disequilibrium. Furthermore, the thing Dale is talking about ( 'pineapple express') may be the enigma code as we don't fully understand what it is or why Red is hiding information from Dale and Saul. The action code is the fighting over Red trying to get the phone, as it develops a narrative and creates suspense of whether he will get it or not and ruin Dale and Saul's plans.

MIGRAIN introduction to Media: Reading an image

Denotation - this advert contains two split images, the left image being 50 Cent himself and the right image conveys images of finger prints, along with a quote from 50 Cent and a tagline going over both images. Furthermore, the brands logo that is being promoted is at the bottom on the right hand side.

Connotation - 50 Cents facial expression is quite serious and this is emphasised with the monochrome effect. Also, the finger prints on the right relate to criminal records witch add to the serious atmosphere of the poster. The quote on the poster says "I am what I am" which connotes that 50 Cent is proud of what he is and has nothing to be ashamed of. Furthermore, the left image shows 50 Cent looking serious along with him wearing a chain and a vest top which portray a scar on his muscles, this may suggest 50 Cent was involved with a lot of violence and may of been in trouble with the police, hence the finger print images. Therefore, the quote "I am what I am" is used to convey that even though 50 Cent had a rough past, he still made something of himself and he is proud of his past and its what made him what he is today.

Colour/Lighting - The colour of this poster is monochrome to set a serious/dramatic atmosphere for the audience.
