MIGRAIN introduction to Media: Reading an image

Denotation - this advert contains two split images, the left image being 50 Cent himself and the right image conveys images of finger prints, along with a quote from 50 Cent and a tagline going over both images. Furthermore, the brands logo that is being promoted is at the bottom on the right hand side.

Connotation - 50 Cents facial expression is quite serious and this is emphasised with the monochrome effect. Also, the finger prints on the right relate to criminal records witch add to the serious atmosphere of the poster. The quote on the poster says "I am what I am" which connotes that 50 Cent is proud of what he is and has nothing to be ashamed of. Furthermore, the left image shows 50 Cent looking serious along with him wearing a chain and a vest top which portray a scar on his muscles, this may suggest 50 Cent was involved with a lot of violence and may of been in trouble with the police, hence the finger print images. Therefore, the quote "I am what I am" is used to convey that even though 50 Cent had a rough past, he still made something of himself and he is proud of his past and its what made him what he is today.

Colour/Lighting - The colour of this poster is monochrome to set a serious/dramatic atmosphere for the audience. The lighting in the left image is quite dark with only 50 Cents face being highlighted, which emphasises his serious facial expression.  Also, the left image has a high contrast but around certain areas, for example around his face and shoulder are light to show a clearer image. In comparison, the image on the right has a low contrast to convey a clearer image of the finger prints.

Composition/Pose - The two images have been split. 50 Cents position is in conveys a very serious look as he isn't smiling and doesn't look very relaxed, this can be emphasised with his muscles being in the shot, which make him look more masculine. The quote "I am what I am" is positioned over both images to convey hes had a rough past and but hes not ashamed.

Size/Type of shot- The image of 50 Cent is a close up.

Subject Matter -  There isn't a specific product being promoted in this advert, however, the brands logo is visible on the bottom right hand side. This shows that even though no actual product is being promoted they used a celebrity to gain more attention to the brand, as people would pay more attention if it was someone famous.

Setting - It isn't clear where the image of 50 Cent is set, however, due to the images of the finger prints on the right, it may be at a police station.

Target Audience - This advert may be aimed at predominantly at teenagers, as the company have used 50 Cent to represent the younger generation.

The dominant view of this advert is to portray to the audience, mainly teenagers, that you shouldn't be ashamed of who you are and you should be proud of your past, even if it was tough. Therefore, 50 Cent is seen as a role model. However, the oppositional  view to this, may be the audience thinking that Reebok is influencing the bad behavior to the audience and therefore, 50 Cent could be seen as a negative figure instead of a role model.

Denotation - This is an advert of Blake Lively promoting a "Chanel" handbag, she is standing on stairs and and looking directly into the camera, with quite a serious facial expression. The brand name is clearly shown at the bottom right, just under the black handbag, to convey a clear message to the audience of what product it is.

Connotation - Blake Lively has a serious yet persuasive look, to lure people into buying the product. Its quite a plain poster, however, Blake Livelys facial expression is dramatic enough to entice the audience to buy the product.

Colour/Lighting - There isn't a lot of colour in this poster, however, black is quite a serious and dramatic colour which adds a lot of effect even though its plain. The lighting is focused on Blake's face and the Chanel bag, to portray a clear image of what is being advertised.

Composition/Pose - Blake Lively is positioned so her body is facing one way and her head is turned to face the camera, to create a dramatic look. Also, shes clearly holding the bag in a position which is very visible to the audience. Shes also looking directly into the camera to entice the audience.

Subject Matter - The subject matter of this poster is to advertise the product, which is a designer handbag ; Chanel. The company has used a celebrity to help promote the product as more people would be interested if it was being promoted by someone famous.

Size/Type of shot-  The shot of Blake Lively is a medium shot.

Setting -  The setting of this image isn't very clear, but it may be in a house due to the stairs.

Target Audience - The target audience of this product would probably be aimed at women of a more higher age, as Chanel is an expensive brand.

The dominant view of this may be to show to the audience that Chanel is mainly for elder women as the actress Blake Lively is promoting the product. However, an oppositional view to this may be that the product is very expensive, as Blake Lively is quite wealthy and she has this product in her hand.
Media Consumption

  • Newspapers
I don't read newspapers very often, due to always finding out about news online, or watching the news on TV. However, when I do come across a newspaper, I mainly read the headlines on the first page and then sometimes the first couple of pages as I find them more relevant. I never read the articles towards the end as I find them less interesting. My dad mostly buys newspapers, however, he doesn't buy them very frequently anymore due to online apps.  I look at online newspapers, such as the daily mail, the mirror, etc.

  • Magazines
I don't usually read magazines, as I keep up to date with everything on the Internet and online as its much easier and accessible.

  • Television
I  spend about 6 hours weekly watching TV, I usually watch television in the evening. The main programmes I watch are; The Vampire Diaries,Petty Little Liars and Friends. I watch these by myself as other members of  my family aren't really interested in these types of shows. I watch Friends whenever its on TV, however, I catch up on The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars on Netflix, on my laptop.

  • Radio
Yes I do listen to the radio, I mainly listen to the radio in the car and sometimes in my room. I don't particularly enjoy listening to the radio as I don't like the music played nowadays. So I don't always listen to the radio.

  • Cinema
In the last month I have watched on film in the cinemas - The Visit, I went to watch it with a friend. I watched Horrible Bosses on demand,at home with my sister and we both decided to watch it. If I'm by myself, ill watch films on my laptop. But if I'm watching films with other people Ill watch them on the TV.

  • Online
I access the Internet everyday, mostly at home on my phone or laptop. I mainly use google, but I also use social apps such as; Whats App, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter. I use these to keep in touch with friends and to see what everyone's getting up to. I also use them for entertainment. I use my laptop to access the Internet for homework. However, I use my phone mainly to access the Internet as its easier and I have all of my apps in one place.

Action Plan:  I need to purchase more newspapers in order to know whats going on around the world, or visit more online news sites. Furthermore, I need to read more magazines so I can develop my knowledge of media.
