Narrative

From this scene we can tell that Tom Cruise is the main character, as most of the shots are of him, from this we can infer that Tom Cruise may be the Hero and Emily Blunt may be the Helper as she is another character that has a full shot in terms of Vladimir Propp's 'stock  characters. Furthermore, from this clip we can understand that the Villain are the mechanical creatures that are creating a war with the humans.  In addition, we can tell that Tom Cruise isn't used to the surrounding he is in or isn't fully aware of what he's doing. Therefore, Todorov's theory of 'Disequilibrium' can be used, as we can tell something (the villain) has disturbed an existing state of harmony. The Donor in this scene could be the machine Tom Cruise is wearing as it's protecting him from the villain. The Action codes in this film that help develop a narrative are the machines being used to kill the mechanical creatures and the creatures themselves, as it makes the audience wanting to watch on and find out what happens. Finally, the reason of why the creatures are attacking can go under the Enigma codes as it creates mystery during the narrative.

From the close-up at the start of the scene, we can tell that Stefan is one of the main characters. We can tell that Damon may be the Villain as the non-diegetic music creates and uneasy atmosphere as Damon appears. Furthermore, the way he walks around the room and hits Stefan conveys that he's the more dominant character. A hero hasn't been identified in this scene, however, we can tell that Stefan is the good guy, as he's more understanding and not so violent. We can tell that the Equilibrium has been disturbed as there is no longer an existing state of harmony, but violence and tension. Furthermore, the enigma code of this scene is why Damon wants to give Stefan a life time of misery. The action codes of this scene are the veins that appear on Stefan's face to show us that he isn't human, also the strength they both have when they are fighting, helps the audience understand they're not normal human beings.

In terms of Propp's stock characters the villain is Red, as he acts dodgy and then starts to beat up Saul and Dale. The Hero could be Dale, as he's the one who realises Red is lying to them. The helper are both Saul and Dale, as they both help each other fight off Red. The donor in this scene is whatever both characters can use to defend themselves in the house. However, there is no Princess (person being saved by the hero) in this scene. In terms of Todorov's theory there is an equilibrium for a short moment, however this is disrupted when Dale realises Red is lying and they begin to fight and ends up with a disequilibrium. Furthermore, the thing Dale is talking about ( 'pineapple express') may be the enigma code as we don't fully understand what it is or why Red is hiding information from Dale and Saul. The action code is the fighting over Red trying to get the phone, as it develops a narrative and creates suspense of whether he will get it or not and ruin Dale and Saul's plans.
